The merfolk had once been nomads. Hunter gatherer types. Roaming the seas on somewhat predictable migratory patterns, following schools of their favorite fish, foraging the seaweed forests as they roamed. The idea of staying in one place didn't resonate with them. And isn't it the natural inclination of the merfolk to keep moving? To always have fresh water streaming through their gills? Continuously in motion, like the sea itself.

So why would they stop and settle down? Seems like a lot of work, binding all the tribes, organizing hierarchies, division of labor, concentration of power... all the things we associate with the Mermaid Imperium. The ocean was their Eden, providing all of their needs. Why give that up for underwater castles and keeps and treasure rooms and great halls?

It all started with a little baby oyster.

I could tell you the tale of the Fwang. and their spider silk communication lines that spanned oceans.

I could tell you of the Hr'wk and their archeology of cruelty that took centuries to rot.

I am very old.

Instead, I will tell you of how the Mermaid Imperium came to be. It is a much happier tail.

Ha ha, get it?
